Things not to translate

The game contains some content that should not be translated - like song lyrics, or output from ssh commands in a hacking sequence. Most of these strings are labelled with do-not-translate. They still need to be copied over to every language, but should not be changed.

In general, use the Polish translation (which is done in-house by devs) as a guideline; if something is not translated there, probably should not be translated in your language as well.

Automated checks

We use various automated checks to detect formatting errors, missing placeholders, and other potential problems. You can view the list of failed checks on your language overview page.

In some cases, you might get failed checks for correct translations. For example, your translation might end with a different punctuation mark than the English source string. If you are confident that a failed check can be ignored for a specific case, you can dismiss it by clicking the Dismiss button for the corresponding check.

Translations with dismissed checks will be grouped under the Translated strings with dismissed checks status. This is useful to keep track of dismissed checks and is not considered an error, so it doesn't affect the translation status percentage.

As a general rule, try to keep the number of dismissed checks as low as possible, while favoring natural sounding translations instead of trying to satisfy the checks at all cost.

Placeholders

Some strings contain placeholders like {origin/shipname} or %.1f, which will be replaced with the appropriate name or value during gameplay. These placeholders will be highlighted by the editor.

It is vital that your translation contains all present placeholders verbatim – mismatching placeholders will cause problems from names not showing up, to crashing the game.

There is a corresponding automated Placeholders check to help you with this. Translations failing this check should be fixed as soon as possible.

Glossary

The game has many names and technical terms that will come up repeatedly, like Hardpoint or Ganymedian Anarchy. In order to improve consistency across time and contributors, you can add terms and their translations to the Glossary.

Whenever you translate a string that contains terms found in the Glossary, they will show up on the right side and can be added with one click. Contributors should stick with established terms to avoid inconsistencies.

Notifications

Weblate can send you an email when translations are added or changed. You can enable and configure these notifications in your Profile Settings.

By submitting translations to this project, you agree to release them on CC BY 4.0 Attribution 4.0 International license. This means your contributions can and will be included in the game, and you will be credited for it.
